A42 Was Closed Near Ashby After Lorry Collision Caused Spillage of Hazardous Material On To Carriageway

A collision between two lorries resulted in hazardous material being leaked on to the A42 between Ashby and Measham today (Tuesday).

Emergency services needed Hazmat protection with fire crews from Ashby, Swadlincote and two from Coalville attended the incident.

And it was reported that 500litres of leaked fluids had to be contained after spilling on to the carriageway.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said on its website that one of the vehicles was carrying chicken animal waste.

The incident forced the A42 Eastbound to be closed.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Initial information was received stating collision involving two Large Goods Vehicles, one leaking hazardous load.

"One appliance from Ashby, one from Swadlincote, two appliances from Coalville including specialist Hazmat appliance

"Upon arrival incident confirmed and no persons trapped. One LGV leaking chicken animal waste which was en route to Nottingham to be disposed of.

"Fire Service made the vehicle safe, stemmed the leak, protected the environment from any further contamination by use of clay mats on drains.

"Approximately 500lires of leaked fluids were recovered by fire service into a containment dam.

"Fire service currently liaising with Environmental Agency on the best means of disposal.

"A42 Eastbound closed, one lane remains open on A42 westbound."

Highways England says the road is now open in both directions.

But it posted a photo of one of the crashed vehicles saying: "Here is an image from the scene.

"As you can see this will take some time to clear up. Rest assured that we are working closely with the fire brigade, ambulance service, police, and recovery contractors to get the road reopened as quickly as we can."
