All lanes southbound on the A42 were closed this evening (Wednesday) between Ashby and Measham after what has been described as a 'police incident' - which involved a car colliding with an HGV.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said the HGV had straddled the central reservation.

They gave more details an hour after the incident and a spokesperson said: "On arrival, Incident Commander confirmed Road Traffic Collision involving a car and HGV.

"HGV had straddled the central reservation.

"No persons trapped. Fire, Police and Ambulance crews on scene.

"Car had left the carriageway and gone down the embankment.

"Two persons in car self-extricated before fire crews arrived.

"Third casualty in car with injuries carried up embankment on stretcher with the aid of the Technical Rescue crew and conveyed to hospital by ambulance.

"All casualties in the care of ambulance service."

Another lane northbound was also closed off shortly after 6.30pm.

Leicestershire Police have not yet released details of the incident - but the latest update comes from the fire service.

But they posted the following on social media: "Road closure, 18.40 hours.

"A42, all lanes closed southbound from Junction 12 to 11, and one lane northbound between 11 and 12.

"We are dealing with a police incident, please avoid the area.

"Thank you for your understanding.

"Updates to follow."

The road was later reopened to traffic.
