Up Close In Ashby: Why Market's Street's Newest Shop Is A Worthy Addition To The Town

By Graham Hill 4th Nov 2020

Ashby's newest shop says it is ideally suited for customers looking to buy essentials during the latest coronavirus lockdown.

Pennies Worth opened for business in Market Street last Saturday after building a strong reputation at their other store in Atherstone.

The family-run business found their products in demand during the summer lockdown - with essential items one of the mainstays of the shop.

And despite launching on the day the Government announced a November-long Covid-19 lockdown - after an official opening by Ashby's Mayor and Mayoress - they will be staying open.

Taking a look inside reveals Pennies Worth has almost anything you will need in terms of household goods - and if they do not stock it, they will try and get it for you.

The store will be run by Abdul Wahab - known as Abs - and his daughter Sana, one of five children.

Wife Bash Wahab says they decided to open up a shop in Ashby because of the town's community feel.

She told Ashby Nub News: "We're in Atherstone which is a community town, we've always been able to help the community, it's totally different to being in a city.

'We love to help and we want to give back, we visit Ashby on and off anyway.

"And with any business, you do your homework and for a number of years we thought: 'Ashby is lovely and we'd really fit in nicely with the town'.

"We can totally relate to Ashby, it has a twin feel to Atherstone, that was the reason to choose it.

"The Atherstone store is very successful, you can go into the town and ask anyone about Pennies Worth and they know us and my husband.

"We have people who were our first customers and they're very good friends who come in for a cup of tea.

"Maybe they've broken a wheel on their trolley and need it fixing."

But Bash says Pennies Worth will be providing what they hope will be a valuable service once lockdown resumes.

She added: "In Atherstone, as with any business, we had a knock-on effect during lockdown, but with us selling household items, we've been one of the essential shops.

"For many, we were a life-saver, we were selling essentials, the basics, toilet rolls, that kind of thing

"We will be able to stay open, and we don't have to expand our lines in a pandemic, we have always sold these sort of household goods.

"We have all the health and safety in place, we will have a limit on who's allowed in at any one time.

"It's for the safety of the customers and staff. We have masks available."

Bash explained that Pennies Worth brings plenty of experience to Ashby.

She said: "We're a family run business, we've been involved in retail for over 20 years.

"We started off in Atherstone 15 years ago, and we're very much here for the community - we have a lot of involvement with local charities.

"We've run events in Atherstone, such as car boot sales, craft fairs and if there's anything we can do after lockdown, we will.

"We love supporting charities if we can, other traders as well.

"So if they ever need anything, we're here.

"Our main focus is always customers, we pride ourselves in good customer services, and if we don't sell it, then ask us, we'll get it for you.

"We're really good like that.

"We try our best with all the essentials, and we very much believe in quality and affordability."

Bash says there should be something to interest everyone in the store.

She said: "In lockdown, everyone's gone into a lot of baking, including myself!

"So, we have a whole section of kitchenware, plus there's stationary for children and students, office workers.

"We have socks and underwear, a full range of pet products, car products and a range of hardwares.

"There are paints to tools, and we do offer good prices to local tradesmen, it's very difficult if you're a self employed person and you're not going to warehouses where you have a minimum spend of hundreds, we'll happily get it for you."
