Ashby turned out on their doorsteps at 8pm on Thursday evening for the 'Clap For Carers' tribute to the NHS and care workers for their work in battling the Coronavirus pandemic.

People from all over the town could be seen applauding as part of a UK gesture in recognition of those fighting the outbreak which effectively brought in a state of lockdown.

Ashby residents in places such as Malvern Crescent, Churchill Close, Market Street, Nottingham Road, Hastings Park, Avenue Road and Western Close could be seen at the front of their houses.

One contributor to the Next-door Ivanhoe page posted: "The residents in the retirement complex on Western Close came out and we heard those on Avenue Road."

Another wrote: "Wow !! What can I say? That was so emotional. Well done to everyone in the NHS and all of the people that support the cause.

"We have a hard time ahead and well done Malvern Crescent."

The BBC website reported nationally that the Royal Family and the Prime Minister joined well-wishers who flocked to their balconies and windows to applaud.

A message from the NHS on social media described the tribute as "emotional".

The Queen said the UK was "enormously thankful" to those in science, health and the emergency and public services.
