Ashby Ivanhoe returned to winning ways after a trio of goals saw off Wolverhampton Sporting at the NFU.

After four games without a win, Ivanhoe may have been forgiven for thinking that their luck was out after Sam Grouse struck the crossbar with a curling effort inside the opening ten minutes.

Moments later, they had the chance to take the lead again when Ash Garner found the ball at his feet inside the penalty area. On this occasion however, Garner struggled to get the ball out of his feet and his shot was saved by Aidan Cox.

Refusing to be deterred, Ivanhoe took the lead at the mid-way point in the half. As has been the case on many occasions this season, Chris Acott found Grouse on the right of the penalty area, his backheel setting up Gabe Webster to slot into the far corner.

Still reeling from a heavy defeat to Stapenhill last time out, Wolves would not allow Ivanhoe's dominance to continue.

The closest they came to an equaliser was when Stanley Mugisha, dangerous throughout the half, forced Tommy Dyche into a fine save at his near post shortly before the break.

Much of the second half passed without goal mouth action, however Ashby sealed three points with 15 minutes to play as Chris Acott smashed the ball across Cox to double the lead.

There was a slight pre-season feel about the half, which lacked intensity throughout. Despite this, Ashby increased the pressure on their opponents late in the half, and looked to put the game truly out of sight after Will Robson, on as a substitute was fouled in the box.

Grouse took his season tally to 30 by sending Cox the wrong way, with a spot kick that found the bottom left corner.

The victory marks the start of an extraordinary run of games for much of the Midland Football League. With postponed games across the league rearranged for the next couple of weeks, it will be a busy period for Andy Gray's team.

Ivanhoe return to action on Monday as they travel to Wednesfield, looking to complete a league double over their opponents and start another winning run.
