Youngsters from Measham have planted nearly 2,000 bulbs to brighten up a North West Leicestershire space in time for spring.

Ten volunteers from the Measham and District Youth Club took part in a planting session at Millennium Garden to get the bulbs in the ground ready to bloom next year.

The initiative was inspired by North West Leicestershire District Council's (NWLDC) Green Shoots Grant scheme which aims to create bright floral displays in community spaces.

The youth club worked with The Conservation Volunteers who granted permission for the planting to take place in the Millennium Garden.

In total, 21 community groups and parish councils applied resulting in 51,000 orders of bulbs including narcissi, daffodils, crocus, tulips and snowdrops.

The group opted for a mixed bulb option with NWLDC funding 50 per cent of the costs as part of the match funded scheme.

Martin Vaughan, Secretary at Measham and District Youth Club, said: "Ten of our members braved the rain to come and plant the bulbs in time for next spring.

"They really got stuck in and it was great to see them all wanting to make a positive contribution to their local community."

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "It's great to see young volunteers get their hands dirty and do something positive for their local community.

"We're really grateful to all of the community groups and parish councils for applying and helping us to reach a total order of 51,000 bulbs.

"Many community spaces across the district have really benefitted from this scheme and I'm looking forward to seeing the bulbs in full bloom next spring."
