Woodcote Primary School pupils play their part in Ashby's Commonwealth Day celebration

Pupils from Woodcote Primary School in Ashby took part in the town's Commonwealth Day celebration at the War Memorial Garden.
Rev Sue Field, team rector at St Helen's Church, conducted a short service, along with readings from the school children.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Damilola Ojuri, with other Ashby Town Councillors also attended the event in Brook Street.
Rev Field said: "There are only a few of us here today, but gathered with us in spirit are the 2.4 billion people of the 56 countries of the Commonwealth, who live in friendship with one another under the leadership of our King, Charles III."

The service then heard the Affirmation of the Commonwealth, which was followed by children raising the Commonwealth Flag.
The service concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and a Blessing.

Suzanne Jones, Headmistress of Woodcote Primary School, said: "I think it was very important to bring the children here and make them aware, particularly as there's so much going on in the world at the moment, with the various conflicts.
"This actually does something that brings people together.
"The children learn about the Commonwealth in the classroom, but this makes it more real in that we're doing it for a purpose. It was also a great honour for our school to be involved."
