Saturday's Emergency Services Day at the Bath Grounds attracted around 2,000 people to meet representatives from Leicestershire Police, Fire Brigade and East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Representatives from all three were on hand to meet the public - and offer some advice to anyone considering a career in any of those services.

Visitors learned about the role the emergency services play in North West Leicestershire and how they help the public on a daily basis.

One of the highlights was a demonstration by fire crews from Ashby and Coalville about dealing with a road traffic accident - and a person trapped inside their vehicle.

They showed how they would cut into a car - with specialist equipment used to take the roof off the vehicle.

After that, the injured person is carefully transferred on to a stretcher before the ambulance service take over.

But the event had to be moved to another part of the Bath Grounds at short notice as the original site had been churned up by a food festival held the previous evening.

But Ashby de la Zouch Town Council - which staged the day - said it had been a success in spite of that.

Town Centre Manager, Stuart Benson, told Ashby Nub News: "I couldn't believe the numbers again, the people of Ashby have come out to support a fantastic event for a good cause.

"We also had a volunteer village raising funds and awareness of all the emergency services. These guys all do a fantastic job. All for free.

"So it was showing everything that's available within our local community. It was great to see that the crowds have come down in support.

"Having the demonstrations in the arena made it a unique thing, people don't get to witness that kind of insight.

"Plus, the kids loved getting in the vehicles - especially the riot van. They thought they were going to be trapped and they were going to prison!

"But you don't normally get that up close and personal to an emergency service vehicle or to be able to get into the fire engine or the back of an ambulance.

"There was a real appreciation there from the public. And hopefully, they'll recruit a lot of new people with the next generation coming up and showing them what the job is all about."

The Ashby Police Beat Team also posted their reaction to the day on social media.

They said: "The Ashby Beat Team, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service welcomed visitors to Bath Grounds where all three hosted a well-attended and successful event.

Ashby Pride was among the organisations raising money for charity at the event

"Visitors were able to enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what we all do on a day-to-day basis.

"The weather was kind to us, which was also helped the day to run smoothly and bolstered attendance numbers.

"All the services involved really enjoyed the informal interaction with the people they serve and it was clear that a good time was had by all.

"A big thank you should also go out to our Police Cadets who supported us during the engagement, some of whom gave their own advice and support to those who visited the crime prevention stand."
