North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) says it is set to continue its waste services review after the Government provided a long-awaited update to the Simpler Recycling legislation - due to take effect from April 1, next year.

NWLDC adds it will now use the new government guidance and feedback given by Ashby and Measham area residents as part of its survey on container options to decide on suitable recycling containers to replace the current boxes and bags.

The council, which began a review of its waste service in March 2023, had recently joined other local authorities in pressing the Government for clarity on recycling collection laws.

Now, an update outlines that all councils across England will be expected to provide collections for residual (non-recyclable) waste, food waste, paper and card, and all other dry recyclable materials such as plastic, metal and glass.

However, the guidance also gives councils the flexibility to decide on the best systems to collect these different types of waste to suit local needs.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community and Climate Change at NWLDC, said: "After months of waiting for clarification from the Government, I am delighted that we can now move forward with our ambitious plans to introduce a new recycling system in the district.

"We can all agree that our recycling collections must be made simpler and more efficient. One of my key priorities is to make sure we deliver on our pledge to improve the service for people in North West Leicestershire.

"Having this clarification now means we can finally decide on the best approach for our district."
