Two separate dog attacks on sheep took place in villages near Ashby in the build up to Christmas.

The incidents occurred in Donisthorpe - where two sheep were killed and eight injured - and Packington, where one sheep was so badly injured it had to be put to sleep.

North West Leicestershire Police have issued an appeal for information about the attacks - which have been described as also having 'costly implications for the owners'.

The police have given more details on their Facebook page and said: "Between 4pm on the 17/12/21 and 8:30am on the 18/12/21, two sheep were killed and eight injured in an incident that occurred in a field off of Church Street, Donisthorpe.

"Between 11am and 3pm on the 23/12/21, one sheep was so badly injured that it needed to be put to sleep, this incident occurred in a field off of Ashby Road, Packington.

"Were you in either of the above locations around those times?

"Did you see or hear anything?

"If so, please call 101 and provide your details for myself the officer in charge PC 237 Emma Holmes."

We have included a photo of one of the sheep killed in the attacks.

PC Holmes also issued a warning to dog owners when they pet is around livestock.

The online post continued: "For those of you who have dogs and like to go for walks in the more rural areas, it is highly likely that you will come across livestock.

"At present, I am dealing with two incidents where sheep have been attacked, not only causing injuries and death to some, but it has also had costly implications for the owners.

"Livestock worrying IS a criminal offence and comes under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953.

"'Worrying' can be when a dog either attacks or chases livestock causing injury or suffering.

"Dogs generally have an instinct to chase, even if they are usually obedient and good with other animals.

"But if dogs chase, they can do serious damage to sheep, even if they don't catch them, the stress alone can cause those that are pregnant to miscarry their lambs.

"These incidents, aren't just a threat to the farmer or land owner's livelihood, it's also a dangerous situation for the animals involved, and could lead to more risk if the animals get onto the road.

"It IS important that you keep your dog on a lead and under control around livestock even if you believe that they would return if you called them.

"It IS important to make sure that boundaries to your property are secure to prevent your dog from escaping and causing harm.

"A farmer IS allowed to kill a dog if it's worrying their livestock.

"There is no excuse, please take responsibility."
