The new G-Park complex is tipped to boost economic recovery

The new G-Park warehouse complex to be built on the outskirts of Ashby has been tipped to give the local economy a huge boost as the East Midlands comes out of lockdown.

Planning permission for the buildings was given by North West Leicestershire District Council in January - that was despite strong objections from key figures in the area as well as Ashby de la Zouch Town Council.

The promise of 1,000 new jobs did little to stem the opposition, especially with similar structures at Castle Donington and Coalville.

But the development will now happen at the site which is off the A511 near Corkscrew Lane, and is set to occupy 736,000 sq feet.

It was formerly the Lounge Coal Preparation and Disposal Point.

G-Park owners GLP says the project will be at the heart of a 'golden triangle' for logistics - the supply chain of managing how resources are acquired, stored, and transported to their final destination.

Property Magazine International reports Planning Director Gwyn Stubbings as saying: "The proposals to redevelop a brownfield site will deliver significant economic benefits to the area, including improved infrastructure and 1,000 new jobs at a time when the need for logistics has never been greater.

"The logistics industry will continue to play a vital and important role in supporting economic recovery in the UK.

"This development will respond to the significant and outstanding demand for modern and sustainable warehouse space."

GLP has highlighted the location of the complex which is adjacent to the M42 with links to the M1 and East Midlands Airport.
