Man, 39, is arrested after Ashby householder calls police during late night burglary as thief steals car

A man has been arrested in South Yorkshire following a burglary at an Ashby home in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed details of the incident which happened at a property on the new Potter's Grange estate, off Smisby Road.

After being disturbed during the burglary, a Volkswagen car was stolen as the intruder made his escape.

But he was tracked down just over 60 miles away from Ashby where the vehicle was recovered and the man arrested.

Details of the incident have been widely shared on the Spotted Ashby de la Zouch Facebook page, but the police issued a report this morning (Wednesday).

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: "A 39-year-old man was arrested following a report of a burglary at an address in Ashby, yesterday (Tuesday).

"Shortly after 1am, police received a call from the occupant stating that a burglary was taking place and that the suspect had been disturbed.

"A laptop, sound bar and the occupant's car – a Volkswagen Up – were taken.

"The man, from Birmingham, was subsequently arrested in South Yorkshire and the car was recovered by police.

"He remains in custody and enquiries are continuing."
