Schoolchildren from an Ashby primary school took part in Monday's Commonwealth Day service at the town's War Memorial.

The service was led by Revd Tim Phillips attended by staff and pupils from Years 5 and 6 of Ashby Hill Top Primary School, Councillor John Deakin and Mrs Karen Deakin, Mayor and Mayoress of Ashby de la Zouch, along with Ashby de la Zouch Town councillors.

During the service, pupils from Hill Top Primary read out The Act of Affirmation of the Commonwealth and raised the Commonwealth Flag.

Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations and often held on the second Monday in March.

It is marked by an Anglican service in Westminster Abbey, normally attended by the monarch as Head of Commonwealth along with the Commonwealth Secretary General and Commonwealth High Commissioners in London.

The Union Flag is flown from UK public buildings to mark the occasion.
