Leicestershire Police's night-time warden scheme has proved to offer a 'cost-effective' alternative to traditional policing.
The scheme, which started in July 2024, involves deploying wardens to patrol known hotspots for violence and anti-social behaviour during peak hours on Friday and Saturday nights.
The aim is to ease pressure on police resources while improving safety and public confidence.
Since it started, the project has seen a reduction in violent crime, has helped to protect vulnerable people - particularly lone females - and has also had 'positive feedback' from local businesses.
It also costs 'significantly' less than regular police patrols.
The wardens wear a uniform, equipped with body-worn cameras and GPS trackers
The forces Prevention Directorate Inspector, Will Prince, said: "This innovative approach demonstrates how targeted partnership working can enhance public safety, reduce crime and build stronger community relationships—without placing additional strain on police resources."
Councillor Michael Wyatt, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Climate Change at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "This initiative shows what's possible when we work together to tackle serious violence proactively.
"The presence of dedicated wardens has made a real difference to how safe people feel in Ashby town centre at night.
"It's a smart, community-focused approach that not only supports our police but also strengthens public trust and wellbeing."
