Eight men were issued with a 'record-breaking' number of one-year bans after breaking into an off-limits section at Staunton Harold Reservoir and diving into the water.

Police were called to the South Derbyshire attraction near Ashby and spoke to the gang who had come from the Derby area.

Officers said the men were caught "climbing on a reservoir dam wall, pier and bell tower" after ignoring the displayed danger warning signs.

The 'scantily-clad' group apparently could not see what they had done wrong and why the police had been called.

But the dangers of diving into the deep water - as well as causing damage to the dam walls - was pointed out to them.

They were also told of the 'potential impact on lower reproductive parts due to the presence of significant concentrations of alkaline in the water.'

The community protection notice warnings were issued prohibiting the group swimming in the Reservoir waters for 12 months.

Details of the incident were posted on the Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team's Facebook page.

It reads: "To the gang of scantily-clad men who vaulted a locked gate at Staunton Harold Reservoir, before climbing on a reservoir dam wall, pier and bell tower – despite several highly-visible danger-warning signs. What on earth were you thinking?

"Some have said to us in the past: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam" - but we do care passionately about public safety.

"So we sprang into action. Arriving at the incident we were shocked to see a group of eight men diving head-first into the water, despite the dangers posed below.

"The owners of the reservoir, Severn Trent Water, are quite rightly concerned about the structural integrity of the dam walls and do not want individuals or groups entering restricted zones within the parkland.

"The flushed men, who had travelled to the in-vogue venue from Chaddesden and Oakwood, were at first gobsmacked to see officers approaching them.

"Eyebrows were raised and shoulders were shrugged as they were admonished for frolicking in the waters.

"Officers explained the dangers of the very cold and deep water, which contains many unseen obstacles below, but this still didn't appear to raise their full attention.

"When officers explained that rangers at the reservoir had advised of the potential impact on lower reproductive parts due to the presence of significant concentrations of alkaline in the water, they quickly became animated.

"To ensure we maintained their full interest, all of the men were invited to a local police station, where they were issued with a record-breaking number of community protection notice warnings from one policing incident.

"All eight male members received individual warnings, ordering them not to enter reservoir waters in the future.

"The warning notice lasts for 12 months, and if not adhered to can result in a full notice, which carries criminal sanctions and fines."
