Date confirmed for local government elections in Ashby de la Zouch - with voter safety a priority

By Graham Hill 10th Feb 2021

County Council and Police & Crime Commissioner elections will take place in Ashby this May, it has been confirmed by North West Leicestershire District Council.

But it has been made clear that the council is working hard 'to make sure polling stations will be safe places to vote'.

The elections will be held on May 6 and, in a letter sent out to voters, the council accepts they will take place 'at a time when Covid-19 continues to present risks to public health'.

It means that anyone concerned about voting in person during the pandemic can request a postal vote.

You can also apply to have somebody voting on your behalf - a proxy vote.

However, the letter adds that the option of being able to vote by post does not mean that polling stations will be unsafe.

The announcement comes days after a BBC report said that local elections would be going ahead as planned despite coronavirus restrictions still likely to be in place.
