Councillor calls for extra controls for speeding motorists on key Ashby route after 'wipe out'

An Ashby councillor has called for tighter controls on speeding drivers heading out of town on Nottingham Road.
Cllr Murrae Blair-Park, representing the Money Hill ward, raised the matter at this month's Ashby de la Zouch Town Council planning committee meeting.
Representatives of North West Leicestershire Police spoke to councillors who also aired their concerns.
Cllr Blair-Park says traffic travelling on Nottingham Road towards the A42 is not subject to the same controls as those coming in the opposite direction.
He said that, as a result, speeds can be high around the area of Ashby School and the entrance to the new Money Hill estate.
Cllr Blair-Park also said that a central reservation was 'wiped out' recently when a driver collided with it.
He said: A few weeks ago, we had a vehicle that took out one of the central reservations in terms of the speed it was doing. So what happens is, they're doing 20 miles an hour when coming out of town - they go through one set of traffic lights and then the crossing.

"But you've got cars coming out of the new Money Hill entrance. You've then got vehicles that are probably getting close to 40-45 mph.
"Now, if you're coming into town, you've got an illuminated sign that tells you that you're in excess of 30mph - going out of town, you don't have that.
"So what happened is was the central reservation was wiped out during school time. So obviously, there's a fear for residents who've got children going to that school on Nottingham Road.
"That particular section of road is now very busy for a variety of users. It's still the main entrance for getting to school.
"You've got a lot of children going from the estate that has to cross the road to go there.
"We've got vehicles, commercial vehicles, coming into the development. And people live on development now.
"I just think that area now needs to be looked at - probably a 20mph section while you're going past the school during school hours, or at least as some indication that you're way over the speed limit."
