Ashby MP Andrew Bridgen has predicted a 'remarkable' renewal of the UK economy when Coronavirus restrictions have been eased.

With a severe downturn expected as a result of the Government lockdown, which has lasted almost a month, a recession has been forecast.

But Mr Bridgen believes the measures put in place before the Covid19 outbreak will serve the country well when things can approach some sort of normality again.

And he feels this can be achieved 'rapidly'.

The Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire posted on Twitter: "When the lockdown is over we will need more pro-business policies to return our economy to health.

"And this will be a huge demonstration of the benefits of free market economics.

"With the right policies, the bounceback will be rapid and the economic renewal remarkable."

Mr Bridgen's remarks were made before Chancellor Rishi Sunak emphasised on Tuesday that a prediction of the worst recession in 300 years was just one possible scenario.

He said not every business or household could be protected, but that a "bounceback in growth" was expected when the crisis eases.

A separate International Monetary Fund report says that it expects the British economy to shrink 6.5 per cent in 2020.
