Ashby's Castle Medical Group Theft Of Patient Information: Statement Released

By Graham Hill 26th Feb 2020

Castle Medical Group in Ashby has issued a statement regarding the theft from a doctor's car in which some paperwork containing patient information was taken.

The Group says, in a statement on its website, that the incident took place on Tuesday, February 24.

But they have made it clear that the information on the stolen documents was 'minimal' - and that all patients involved have been contacted.

The incident was highlighted in a post by a member of the Spotted Ashby de la Zouch Facebook site.

But Castle Medical Group released their own statement on Wednesday afternoon.

It reads: "On the evening of 24th February a theft occurred from a Doctor's car which has been reported to the police.

"There was a small amount of paperwork in the car which did include some patient identifiable information and we would like to reassure you that the information was minimal.

"All patients involved have been contacted and notified about what has happened.

"If you have not been contacted then you do not need to be concerned and you can assume that it does not relate to you.

"We would like to thank you for your understanding and continued support.

"As a practice we take the security and confidentiality of your information seriously. Our primary concern is to ensure that any information we hold about you is protected and safeguarded. We would like to apologise for any unnecessary worry this may have caused you, our patients.

"If you have any concerns or queries in relation to this matter please contact the practice and reception will take your details and arrange for the Practice Manager to telephone you."

Ashby Nub News was given a statement by the Information Commissioner's Office on Wednesday - making it clear the incident is being taken seriously.

An ICO spokesman said: "People's medical data is highly sensitive information, not only do people expect it to be handled carefully and securely, organisations also have a responsibility under the law.

"When a data incident occurs, we would expect an organisation to consider whether it is appropriate to contact the people affected, and to consider whether there are steps that can be taken to protect them from any potential adverse effects.

"Castle Medical Group has made us aware of an incident and we will assess the information provided."
