The storms of the last few days may have made national headlines, but it is the effects of one that blew in two years ago that are still being felt in Blackfordby.

When Storm Ciara struck the area in 2020, it caused a partial collapse of the stonework wall on the Nave west gable of St. Margarets Church.

Unfortunately, the insurance will not cover any repairs which are coming in at a substantial cost.

Now a group called 'Friends of St. Margaret of Antioch Blackfordby' has formed, with the support of some residents, and have set themselves the mission of 'Save our Church'.

One of the organisers, Paul Collins, told Ashby Nub News: "The most iconic building in Blackfordby is undoubtedly the church.

"It has an elevated position on top of the hill and can be viewed from wherever you are in the village.

"It dates back to 1856-58 and has stood atop the hill since that time, serving as an important place of worship for the community - and providing a wonderful view with its characteristic spire and tower housing the memorial clock.

"It has withstood the test of time.

"However, in February 2020, Storm Ciara with extremely high winds unleashed its power and caused a catastrophic partial collapse of the stonework wall on the Nave west gable.

"The impact has been significant and unfortunately insurance will not cover any repairs which come at a substantial cost.

"The wall has been protected from the elements by a sheeting.

"However the repairs are needed and unfortunately St. Margaret's does not currently have sufficient funds to cover the restoration of the wall plus other repairs deemed necessary.

"The district church council (DCC) and congregation have formed a group called 'friends of St. Margaret of Antioch Blackfordby' with the support of some residents, and have set themselves the mission to 'Save our Church'.

"The emphasis is on fundraising to allow the work to be completed.

"It is quite a challenge and initially over the next 12 months (and beyond) many fundraising initiatives will be undertaken. The support of the community is vital for success.

"Whilst this fundraising is ongoing, the group have set up a team of volunteers to clean up the churchyard, which, over a number of years, has become overgrown with brambles, saplings and other vegetation.

"It is quite a task that will take many man hours to recover.

"This group have set themselves the ambitious target to have the churchyard in good order ready for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations on June 5.

"The work has commenced and good progress is being made. in areas that have been uncovered we already see bluebells, daffodils, foxgloves and other plants starting to show through!

"The churchyard clean-up is an important step and brings a wider community interest and engagement with the church.

"By working together we believe we can save our church for both current and future generations.

"Since the funds required are substantial, if anyone wishes to consider making a donation then, in the first instance, please contact either Paul Collins ([email protected]) or Lawrie Newton ([email protected]), we would be very grateful and happy to discuss further.

"If anyone is interested in the history of the church or seeing the memorial clock (for WW I and II) we would be delighted to arrange a visit, you could even ring the bell!"

The Mayor of Ashby de la Zouch, Cllr Rita Manning, is also offering her support to the fundraising efforts.

She said: "As a resident and councillor for Blackfordby, I am pleased and proud to be part of the group clearing the churchyard.

"A group of about 10 people have made a vast difference over the last month, prior to a larger group on Saturday (Feb 19) - approximately 20 people - who turned out in very wet and cold conditions.

"It is remarkable what has been achieved so far. An amazing effort.

"Unfortunately, Storm Franklin caused damage to the wall separating the old and the new churchyard so we now have even more work.

"The deadline of the Queens Jubilee is definitely in reach! Please contact the above is you are able to offer help or make a donation."
