Street lighting in Ashby town centre is set to be improved after a request was made to Leicestershire County Council.

A post on the Ashby Pubwatch group Facebook page says that Cllr John Coxon contacted the county council to see what could be done.

Residents have been noticing a distinct lack of lighting in Market Street - raising concerns over public safety and security.

So, with the winter months approaching, it was decided to approach the County Council.

The Pubwatch post, from town councillor Pejman Zamani, says: "Following the hard work by Councillor Coxon, I'm delighted to report that Leicestershire County Council has agreed to replace and improve street lighting on Ashby Market Street.

"Security and safety in the town centre is paramount.

"The night time economy and Ashby is extremely important to local traders, bars and restaurants therefore we must do all we can to ensure people feel safe.

"Councillor Coxon, Kate Zamani (Chair of PubWatch) and myself, the licensee of Zamani's, have been campaigning for over a year to replace and improve the street lighting on Market Street.

"Other measures are also in discussion, and we are hoping to report on these in the coming weeks."

A later post adds: "Great News for Ashby! Working together to get a result for Ashby de la Zouch.

"On May 25, a meeting was held at Zamani's with Rupert Mathews, Leicestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

"One of the points that was high up on the Pubwatch Agenda was to resolve the issues with street lighting on Market Street to ensure that the public felt safe and the CCTV coverage could function to its maximum capacity.

"Many thanks to all involved to ensure this positive outcome!"
