The former royal forest is ideal for walkers, the Heart of England Way and the Staffordshire Way are particularly popular.

Cannock Chase is a haven for mountain bikers with a range of intermediate and beginner trails to bring out your adventurous side or you could transport yourself to the Victorian era with a visit to one of the area's many museums or historical landmarks like Shugborough Hall.

2. Shropshire Hills

Steep is the word here, as the hills offer some stunning views over Shropshire and into Wales to the west and Birmingham to the east. On a clear day, Lond Mynd in Church Stretton is particularly popular for amblers.

A Roman settlement, nearby Shrewsbury is a vibrant town with plenty going on.

The birthplace of Charles Darwin has evolved into an excellent day out or place to stay overnight due to its abundance of pubs, tours of the infamous prison, and quirky shops.

Meanwhile, local market towns like Church Stretton and Ludlow are excellent areas to take in the history and escape the city buzz.

The Severn River running through the hills creates plenty of opportunities for water sports.

3. Cotswolds
