Remembrance Sunday

The Ashby Bath Grounds

UNTIL Sunday 14th November

Ashby's Remembrance Day service will return this month - but with a change of venue.

The town's commemoration would normally take place in Market Street by the Memorial Garden in Brook Street.

Last year's event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But, while the service is back again this year, Ashby de la Zouch Town Council is still aware that Covid precautions still need to be in place.

Therefore, the service will be held at the Bath Grounds on November 14, starting at 10.30am.

The order of service will largely follow the traditional pattern, with two minutes silence at 11.00am and the laying of a small number of symbolic wreaths.

There will be separate areas for the public and participants to ensure social distancing measures can be put in place.

Before that, the council has also announced its plans for Armistice Day on November 11.

At 11am, a small service of remembrance will take place by the War Memorial in Market Street.

The Rev Mary Gregory will take the service and there will be a road closure in place from the junctions of Derby Road and Brook Street.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the Royal British Legion, which recently reached the 100-year milestone, are working together on these commemorative events that will allow residents of the town to pay their respects safely.

It means Ashby will be able to remember those that sacrificed their lives with a physical event this year, although measures will remain in place to reduce the risks of COVID-19.

These measures include an outdoor service to encourage spacing between visitors and a Facebook Live stream for those that feel safer watching the event from home.

Councillor John Coxon, Leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, said: "Remembrance Day is a chance to reflect and remember those we have lost, and to show our gratitude to those that are serving in conflicts around the world.

"I am very pleased that the town will be able to mark Remembrance Sunday by holding a service in a safe and social-distanced way on Ashby Bath Grounds.

"Many of you will want to support the return of a physical event this year, and we'll be encouraging attendees to remember those fallen safely by keeping their distance and only attending if they feel well enough to do so.

"Anyone with symptoms or who simply feels safer at home, can watch the event by tuning into a live Facebook stream on the day."
