Diabetes is a condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. Most of us know people with diabetes, or who are pre diabetic. But what are our risk factors for developing it and what symptoms we should be aware of?
Many people have type 2 diabetes for years without realising because the early symptoms tend to be general, or there are no symptoms at all. What changes can we make to avoid it?
Elenie Robinson is Engagement Lead of the local NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. She will explain the difference between type 1 and type two diabetes. In the UK, over 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
It's very important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it's likely to get worse if left untreated and can cause long-term health problems. There are currently two million people in England at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke.
