The film is set In a northern mill town during the 1st world war where a choral society has appointed a new choirmaster, Dr Guthrie. The members of the society, the young and old men and women not able to fight in the war, regard with suspicion his love of German culture. Not being able to perform Bach (being the 'hun') he suggests performing the Elgar's challenging Dream of Gerontius. Written by Allan Bennett the film blends wit and poignancy and Ralph Fiennes is perfect as the germanophile choirmaster.
