A Melbourne mum was caught by police holding an illegal backyard "bonfire" party "for the sake of the kids" during lockdown.

Gina Harper, aged 35, of Selina Street, was hosting a party on November 5, on the first day the nation had been plunged back into a "circuit-breaker" lockdown, when there was a ban on households mixing.

A woman had to be freed from a car after it overturned on Ashby Road in Moira this afternoon (Tuesday).

Police and ambulance services were on the scene just after 1.30pm and the road had to be closed off.

An Ashby United Community Football Club it is 'horrified' that one of its players was subjected to "sustained homophobic abuse" in a match last weekend.
