POLICE arrested a 'shoeless' motorist for drug-driving offences while in Overseal.

Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team posted on social media this morning (Tuesday) - describing the incident as 'one of the more stranger incidents we've dealt with in recent times'.

Police tracked down the vehicle after reports of a break-in.

The SNT said: "Occupants of a property reported someone trying to get into their home - concerns were raised regarding the driver's behaviour.

"The vehicle leaves the area and PC Boniface responds in order to locate it.

"As he enters Overseal, the vehicle is seen driving erratically and straddling both lanes towards the police vehicle before swerving back over.

"The vehicle is quickly stopped and the driver is found to be wearing no shoes - and what can only be described as displaying signs of being heavily under the influence, making little sense, and the driver admitting to having an extremely large habit.

"Out comes the drug swipe, shortly followed by the red line of truth that confirmed what we already knew - positive for cocaine.

"Driver was arrested and taken to Derby Custody for bloods to be taken, and held for 18 hours in order for a medical assessment and to allow any effect of substances to subside."

Swadlincote Police issued a warning that the outcome of the driver's actions could have ended up being more serious.

The post added: "This is another example of a blatant disregard for our community safety, which could have ended very differently had he not been stopped.

"Despite us raising awareness, we are seeing an ever-increasing rise in drug drivers which has surpassed drink driving.

"We are fast approaching the Christmas drink/drug drive campaign, in which the SNT will be taking part to target drivers who put us all at risk - and where we will also be naming those convicted on social media. Please don't be that person."
