New signage telling the public about CCTV cameras is set to be displayed in Ashby town centre.

The current signs would be replaced by new 'positive' ones which are coloured green rather than yellow.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's planning committee discussed the proposals at Monday's meeting.

While the switch was considered positive, some councillors questioned the effectiveness it would have.

Cllr Carl Benfield said: "I like the positivity of the new sign, it's friendlier.

"Does this sign make any difference to anyone rolling out of a bar at 2am?

"I suspect not, at all. Is the current signage offending anyone? Is this a good use of money?"

But committee chair, Cllr Tom Stanley, said that it was North West Leicestershire District Council who would pay, with the Town Council installing them.

Cllr Murrae Blair-Park added: "Is there any way we can the Town Council logo on these signs?

"Also, it will help in terms of our Purple Flag accreditation.

"This is really good progress, we ought to bring it up at Pubwatch. You might not see it at 2am, but you might have seen it on your way in.

"We're doing everything we can to make it safe for everybody.

"But if there's lapsed behaviour, it'll be there for everyone to see.

"If you do silly things, we'll have a record of it.

"So we can put these signs up and engage with licensed premises.

"We can raise the profile of the town and what we're doing to try and make it safer.

"Where most of the incidents take place is in the night-time economy.

"But if we can get a reputation as being a safe place to be, then maybe we won't always need the signs."

Cllr Pejman Zamani, a local restaurateur, added: "People will be aware that this town is being monitored for their safety.

"I think this is a good move."

The committee decided the signs were acceptable and could be positioned around the Bath Grounds, Market Street, St Helen's Church and North Street and South Street car parks.

North West Leicestershire District Council explained the move in correspondence with Ashby Town Council.

It reads: "We want to promote the use of CCTV as a positive. The cameras are there to protect residents, visitors and businesses, promoting that everything we do with CCTV is about preventing crime.

"As such, we're looking to redesign our signs in a far more positive fashion.

"Rather than warning, it will be informing, and rather than stark white and yellow triangles, it will be the corporate green of North West Leicestershire District Council and will have a positive message."
