Another Rise In North West Leicestershire Coronavirus Case Figures Over 24 Hour Period

By Graham Hill 12th Nov 2020

A total of 101 new Coronavirus cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours in North West Leicestershire.

And more new cases than ever before have been added to totals across the city and county today (Thursday).

There have been 957 cases confirmed in the city and county in the past 24 hours – on the same day that the UK's total increased by a record amount – 33,470.

A massive 445 cases were added to totals in Leicester, with a further 512 detected across the rest of county.

Broken down to district and borough level, there were 158 cases in Charnwood, 101 in North West Leicestershire and 96 in Blaby.

Hinckley and Bosworth's rolling toll increase by 76, Harborough added 67 new cases and a further 55 cases were added in Oadby and Wigston.

Positive results were returned to 50 people in Melton.

Leicestershire's director of public health said a 'last hurrah' before the second lockdown could be to blame for the high rates seen this week.

It is a week since the second set of national restrictions were introduced.

The total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic are:

Leicester: 13,374

Blaby: 2,281

Charnwood: 4,899

Harborough: 1,491

Hinckley and Bosworth: 1,961

Melton: 839

North West Leicestershire: 1,614

Oadby and Wigston: 1,798

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Leicestershire will be added to the list of places where mass testing will be rolled out.

Test kits will be sent to Leicestershire after the county was added to the list of trial areas.

The move follows productive discussions between Leicestershire County Council and the Department of Health and Social Care.

It means that the Government will send the council up to 80,000 kits a week as part of its plan to expand asymptomatic testing across the country.

Council leader, Nick Rushton, said: "This is good news. We've had a productive conversation with Government leads and are pleased to be included on the list. I'm grateful to those MPs who supported our case.

"Like other areas, we want to try every means possible to defeat the virus and enable life to become more normal.

"Given our early application and rates, it was surprising we weren't named initially but this is a helpful outcome and means we can roll out the tests in hot spot areas."

The council can draw down from the national supply as needed but is looking to have a stock of 10,000 kits at any one time to deploy rapidly.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

Leicester: 440.4 cases per 100,000

Blaby: 339.8 cases per 100,000

Charnwood: 359.4 cases per 100,000

Harborough: 222.8 cases per 100,000

Hinckley and Bosworth: 284.6 cases per 100,000

Melton: 335.9 cases per 100,000

North West Leicestershire: 313.7 cases per 100,000

Oadby and Wigston: 401.6 cases per 100,000
