Latest Seven Day Coronavirus Infection Rates For North West Leicestershire Have Been Released

The latest seven day infection rates for North West Leicestershire have been released today (Saturday).

And they remain a concern - particularly among those in the rest of the county.

Until recently, the region was showing some of the lowest figures in Leicestershire.

But there has been a gradual increase and it was announced on Thursday that the district, like the rest of the county, will be placed under tier 3 restrictions this week.

These are the latest figures for North West Leicestershire.

  • Cases in the last seven days: 289
  • Current seven-day infection rate: 278.9
  • Current seven-day infection rate in the over 60s: 259.7

Leicestershire's tier 3 restrictions will be reviewed next on December 16, with key data being analysed before a decision is made on what happens next.

The number of cases, infection rates – in particular in the over 60s and hospital admissions and how the local NHS is coping will all be looked at to help ministers gain an insight into how the city and county are faring in their fight against the virus.

Yesterday, shadow health secretary and Leicester South MP Jonathan Ashworth called on the Government to share 'scorecards' so those living in high or very high alert level areas can track local progress.

The figures for the rest of the county are as follows (as of Nov 27)

Leicester

Seven-day infection rate: 378.9 cases per 100,000 people

Seven-day infection rate in over 60s: 358 cases per 100,000 people

Cases in the last 7 days: 1,342

Leicestershire

Seven-day infection rate: 209.1 cases per 100,000 population

Seven-day infection rate in over 60s: 190.9 cases per 100,000 population

Cases in the last 7 days: 1,909

Real-time admission data is not publicly available but it is understood that ,while hospital admissions have slightly slowed, Leicester's hospitals are still treating more Covid positive patients now than in the first peak of the pandemic back in April.

Last week it was revealed that 260 patients being looked after on city wards had tested positive for Covid-19, with many of them needing intensive care.

The trust has had to halt some non-urgent operations as a result of Covid pressures but it is still performing emergency and urgent surgery as well as cancer treatments. Patients are urged to still attend appointments unless told otherwise.

Acting chief executive Rebecca Brown this week praised staff for their efforts and urged people to call 111, but still access the NHS.

She said: "It's a very challenging time, we are absolutely in wave two and this is wave greater than the first wave.

"In the last week or so we have had to look at some of our electives, where we can we are having to reduce or postpone some electives so that we can support the staff to support areas like ICU, so theatre staff will go and support the ITU teams.

"That does mean there have had to be some cancellations over the last week, we envisage that will continue for the next few weeks, until we see the impact of the national lockdown, because the impact of that lockdown for us won't really come for another week or so."

There were more than 40 Covid-related deaths recorded by the trust last week.
