Video: There's An Unusual Sight On The A42 At Ashby During The Coronavirus Crisis

This is the A42 at Ashby as you have probably never seen it before since it was opened in 1989.

And when the Coronavirus restrictions are lifted, you may never see it like this again during the peak daytime hours.

Former Ashby man Ade Roberts took this video clip of the dual carriageway - which links the M1 with Birmingham and the M5 - during the current lockdown.

Ade posted the footage, taken from Leicester Road, on his Facebook page this week and wrote:" Usually an extremely busy motorway.

"So impressed with people following the #StayAtHome advice. Just listen …."

Non-essential travel is not allowed at the moment which means the normally packed route is virtually empty at the moment.

It is a sight that most drivers wish could be repeated all year round as it can be notorious road for jams and delays.

So if you need to make the most of the near-deserted dual carriageway, now is your chance, as long as your journey is essential of course.

The A42 inks junction 23A of the M1 motorway to junction 11 of the M42 motorway and is in effect a continuation of the M42.

The six-mile - 9.7 kms -  Measham and Ashby-de-la-Zouch bypass section was opened in August of 1989 at a cost of £33million.

But the government has issued clear guidelines over recent weeks to ensure people do not flout the UK's lockdown measures to contain the pandemic.

This includes advising people to only leave their homes for trips, such as shopping for food or travelling to work if needed.

Police have been clamping down on any long-distance travel and telling motorists not to drive to key tourist areas.
