Ashby Civic Society has underlined its opposition to the new G-Park warehouse complex which will be built on the A42 junction near Corkscrew Lane.

The development was given planning permission by North West Leicestershire District Council despite objections from Ashby de la Zouch Town Council and the Civic Society.

Despite those objections being made clear to the District Council's planning committee in January.

An Ashby Civic Society spokesperson said: "We have been pursuing with some vigour the application for the so called G-Park which is planned for the outskirts of Ashby on the Coalville road just past the A42.

"This application was for a six storey Warehouse and Distribution Centre with an entrance off Corkscrew Lane.

"The numbers proposed to be employed are given as 900 staff with about 400 HGV movements per day.

"These plans will completely overwhelm Corkscrew Lane and create major traffic problems on the A511, already a busy and dangerous junction.

"The planning application was heard at the Planning Committee and two members of the Civic Society committee made presentations to the meeting.

"We made the points about traffic problems and environmental issues.

"We asked how this could go ahead on a greenfield site but we were told by officers that as the field would only be converted into a car park, the environment was not a problem!

"We were most disappointed that the officers refuted every point made. The District Council voted in favour of this monstrous scheme.

"It is sad that valuable farmland can be swallowed up for commercial purposes at a time when hundreds of acres of greenfield land are currently being turned into warehouses at East Mids Airport site and Appleby Magna."
